#GivingTuesday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are over so what is next? Christmas? Wrong. The answer is #GivingTuesday. #GivingTuesday started in 2012 and has since encouraged you to open your wallet on the first Tuesday of December for a good cause.

The idea of #GivingTuesday was created by 92Y Center for Innovation and Social Impact and the U.N. Foundation. 92Y hoped 50 nonprofits would use the hashtag #GivingTuesday on their online appeals. One of 92Y’s founding members, Asha Curran, said they ended up with over 2,500 nonprofits using the hashtag in the first year alone.

Since 2012, the number has continued to rise. According to NPR, last years #GivingTuesday brought in $46 million in charitable donations – a 63 percent increase from 2013. Companies like H&M, Dicks Sporting Goods, CVS Health, Walgreens and Southwest Airlines all donate and raise awareness of #GivingTuesday, making it one of the most well-know social media campaigns.

Today, Curran describes the event not so much as a "giving day," but a movement, one that includes a more than just donating money. Get involved today by donating, volunteering, collaborating and getting social. Don't stop giving after December 1. You don't need a hashtag to inspire you to make a difference in someone’s life.

  1. Allie,

I have never heard of #GivingTuesday until now, but I will be sure to participate next year. I really like the overall concept behind this campaign. I am not a black Friday shopper, I will admit Cyber Monday is one I partake in, but ultimately feel like I should have done more with my time and money. I feel like Giving Tuesday should have just as much talk as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The power of giving is unlike any other. Thanks for sharing.
